Beach Power

I was just thinking, after reading one of Bowling's posts. We could have some sway if we could get people to take action on certain topics.

30 phone calls to certain city agencies, can produce action.

So I am just curious, what do you think is the most pressing issue for this community?

And what should we do about it?

Hi Leuty

Like I posted, one of the most serious problems in the beach right now is the traffic and the people who jay walk all over Queen Street.  In particular Lee Avenue.  I am pretty happy at the moment with the Beach but when summer comes that is another problem - breakins, graffiti, etc.

Personally, I think one of the pressing issues is the direction the stores are going in along Queen.
I realize rents are ridiculous but I get discouraged seeing favourite stores and coffee shops close and nail shops and tanning salons take their place.

I'm sad to say that many (including myself) are finding Leslieville as a more desirable area for shopping and restaurants.

Not sure what can be done other than the locals continue to support our merchants.

HI Dixie,
I agree, but i think that has been going on for a long time, and ultimately, retail will be reduced to some scattered cottage industries and cafes.

Unless there was a specific and succesful drive to encourage people to shop locally, (BIA notwithstanding), and residents really cared enough to act.. nothing can stop this trend.

I agree that retail may be hurting in the Beach area. And it wil continue to, but there are still some very cool shops in the area - even if they only last a short time.

I think if people spent their money here on items they would be the same for (a just a little more, considering gas), that the area could be sustainable for some time to come.

The BIA needs to get more specific. It needs to take turns addressing the uniqque needs of businesses.

Too bad there couldn't be a big parking lot right in the middle of it all somewhere - like maybe where the Wave once was...  Wink

I agree and believe the BIA should step in and dare I say it, create some rules that would adhere to the Heritage aspect of our community.

I visit many other small towns and engage the shop owners in conversation about their businesses.  There are very strict rules regarding who and what can take over a space that will enhance the current environment. For example, only specific franchises are able to rent space and they must compliment the specifics of the area.  No neon signs are allowed.

I know in the beach, it is basically whoever is able to pay the rent can move in regardless of how many other similar establishments are there, ie nail shops.

While I still congratulate and frequent the shops that keep with the flavour of the beach, I myself, as well as my friends are finding it less pleasurable to walk and shop the strip.

Perhaps the BIA can persuade owners of buildings to reduce rents and make it easier for tenants to stay in business.  The recession has hurt many.

It's a nice thought Joke99, but I don't see any property owner going for it.

As long as they can get tenants, and some bright eyed dreamers planning to make it big in the wee Beach market - they will do it.

How many years before this becomes the next Parkdale?

/ just kidding
