Question: What is the biggest cause of Pedestrian Deaths?

Jay-walking, other unsafe pedestrian habits
Drivers going too fast
Poor Urban Planning
All of the above

Toronto Pedestrian Fatalities

I know there are multiple causes, hence this poll, but I think pedestrians need to pay more attention, and that drivers should be heavily fined for ignoring lights, or driving too fast.

Driving too fast in the city should be a negligence charge.

I cannot believe the idiot drivers in recent days.  Driving east along Adelaide, a driver was in the far left lane and held up traffic for a number of lights just so he could move over 4 lanes and head south.
Today, I car sped through a cross walk with someone crossing and very nearly hit them.  When we got to the next lights I tried to tell him what he had done and got the old finger and F-off.
Bayview extension, rush hour one morning, a woman drove through every single red light without even slowing down.
If I didn't have to struggle to find my handsfree unit for my cell phone, I would have called the cops.

It is getting very dangerous out there for drivers and pedestrians.

I saw a nutcase last week racing east on Queen near Willow - going about 80 or 90 kph in a convertible black mini Cooper (must've been about -5C). Right during the morning when kids were walking to school.

Would have loved to drop-kick that a-hole.

Definitely drivers are going to have to a better job of sharing the road with pedestrians and cyclists, but at the same time, rightly or wrongly, the more vulnerable have to be more vigilant - it doesn't matter if you had the right of way if you end up in the morgue...

I'm always amazed by crosswalk users who hit the button and go barrelling across the street without checking to make sure cars are stopping.    I've even seen people with strollers do this.  Unfortunately whenever you cross the street, even with a green light at a regular intersection, you are taking your life into your hands and should be looking around - not texting or whatever as you cross.

Drivers, cyclists and pedestrians all have to be aware that others on the roads might not be paying attention, following the rules, etc - there seem to be more and more idiots lately, irrespective of how they get around Smiley

I have noticed that people are more aggressive in their vehicles the last few years.

It's like they get a bit stupid. Even people I know, freak out over a few seconds.

I think it should cost you $10 to beep your horn once. That way you only use it in emergencies - it's original purpose.

And also everyone should have tinted windows - so you can't see people flipping you the bird. Smiley

I'll say they're more aggressive!  Just today I was going down the parkway at 97 km and this young girl was on my tail, so as soon as I moved over, she shot by and in less than a minute,  I estimate her speed went to at least 120 km!  Of course, no police around to pull her over.

It's the speed.

Lots of folks drive too fast, and the ones who don't go fast get abused.

Everyone should just slow the **** down, be 5 minutes late.

It's not always high speed but often not paying attention, both as driver and pedestrian. (I know because a high percentage of my patients are pedestrians) People are busy listening to their ipods or checking their phones for messages, drivers are talking, drinking coffee, keeping an eye on the kids in the back seat ... it's bound to happen. Remember those photos of smokers lungs they used to show us in high school? I think every driver, new and old, should be shown photos of the internal organs of a pedestrian hit by a car (going even legal speed).

labman, just because most of your patients are pedestrians, doesn't make it their fault.

Ever see how long you are given to cross at a crosswalk?

Ever been down to the Lakeshore near Leslie?
It's a big frikkin' risk to try to cross there sometimes.  Sad

Cross walk on Gerrard Street @ Scarborough road is insane. I've personally been hit ,there are numerous accidents, Not long ago while my young son and I where crossing a Police car leisurely drove through and the officer actually waved at us.

I totally agree with you.  The time to get across the roads if you are a pedestrian is ridiculous.   I didn't realize that the crosswalks were times also.  I though you had time to get across and that the lights were blinking for quite some time.  But I do know that crossing at an interesction the time is short for pedestrians, especially older people, mom's or dad's with children and babies, people with dogs, people on walkers or with canes etc.  I keep getting telephone calls regarding Queen and Lee saying they are looking into the problem but nothing has been done yet.  I would like to get a hold of Sandra Bussin but I do not know her proper email address or where her office is or whether she would look into it.  Help please.

Thanks

Yes the drivers are driving too fast, and yes the lights are too short.

But people! Pay attention, and you will have a far less chance of getting hurt as a pedestrian.
